Beppe Loda

Italian DJ Beppe Loda, pioneer of DJ culture and resident at Typhoon (near Brescia) from 1980 to 1987, has been searching for sounds off the beaten path since his first gig in 1973. Playing to as many as 7,000 people a night, producing in excess of 200 mix tapes and pioneering the „Italo Synth“ sound with his MC1 project (just reissued on Synthonic), he has just about done it all. His „Afro“ style (also called „Cosmic“ or „Cosmic Afro“) is as disorienting, funky and inspiring now as it was then.

Functionist (FM4)

A great clubbing with famous Functionist from FM4 Radio (Vienna)

The Functionist

Functionist is a club and radio DJ, music producer and remixer. He is the mastermind behind the legendary daily (Mon - Fri) mixshow FM4 Unlimited. His music productions include work with Aceyalone, The Visionaries or Public Enemy.

The DJ

The Functionist musical universe is defined by Funk. Funk in all modern variations. Originally coming from Hip Hop he plays Electro, Breaks, Soul, Dub, even Jazz and Rock, everything mixed with a Hip Hop approach. His claim is to create a unique, live musical mixture. Clubs in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and beyond (UK, US, Canada) have welcomed Functionist's DJ services. He started as a teenager DJing for the BMX/Skateboardscene, then performed with his Hip Hop band Compact Phunktion and with the birth of a young Austrian Hip Hop scene he made first contact with radio in 1992.

The Radiohead

Radio is the media for Functionist's creative output, whether as a young radio pirate or later with FM4 where he presents the weekly Hip Hop show Tribe Vibes since 1995. In Summer 2005 his brainchild the daily mixshow Summerbreaks is realised. The successful show is soon renamed to Unlimited and installed as a daily programme. From 2 to 3 PM Functionist & Beware combine all musical styles, classics, new releases as well as exclusives remixes they produce themselves. Guests include (among others) Justice, Hot Chip, Ben Mono, J-Star, Stereo MCs, Nickodemus, Kid Fresh, Missill. If he's not on air he takes care of the production department, the sound design and realises special broadcast events.

The Producer

His remix for Hip Hop icons Public Enemy on their album Revolverlution brought Functionist worldwide attention as a music producer. He finally gets to know the band with frontman Chuck D that put him on his musical path in the late 80s. For several months he travelled the US and Canada and recorded with artists like The Visionairies, Aceyalone, Hines Buchanan, Specifics, Toni Blackman and many more. Remixes and productions with Mani Obeya (Sofa Surfers), Toxic Lounge or Texta as well as compositions and sound designs for international TV stations or the opening of the Vienna music festival in 2004 prove Functionist's musical diversity.

Schwefelgelb

In the 00's Sid and Eddy founded their project SCHWEFELGELB and in the following convinced crowds from Germany over whole Europe even to Japan with their hard, driving and timeless emotional sound. "Handsome german boys making in-your-face electro that's as much punk as it is pop", was the headline of the american DropDead-magazine. And SCHWEFELGELB really acts between these two poles, be it appearing in an elaborate theater production or on the biggest Techno festivals.

With their holistic concept involving a combination of musical and visual impact, it is no surprise their dancers Nyx and Hal complement the band ever since. This attitude together with their ecstatic sound of technoid eletronic is making SCHWEFELGELB one of the most appealing newcomers on european ground.

Sketch 5th - Stefano Fontana

The big 5th birthday party of Sketch!
At the turntables a real superstar: Stefano Fontana

Coloured sounds, eclectic vocation, international profile : this is Stefano Fontana in a few words. Grown-up in Milan at the Plastic Club – main club of the Italian artistic circuit – Stefano has always had a real obsession for that imaginary street half way between turntablism, funky B-lines, hip hop, dance old school and all the plastic world correlated. Grown with bread and groove, Stefano Fontana blends the scenes of Chicago, New York and Detroit, electro, house and techno, re-interpreting them for far away: he takes part to the DMC freestyle championship, rear’s up with his BMX, he risk’s his life with trick’s on his skateboard, but especially he draws totally from guru’s like Basement Jaxx, Underworld, Chemical Brothers without naming generals of hip hop like Public Enemy, Ludacris, Timbaland and Neptunes. In a few years, he becomes one of the Italian most hot producers and his first long distance fatigue named Stylophonic is published internationally by Emi: the album Man Music Technology is a crossover of hip hop, breaks and house, absolutely so international that it seems an alien for the national reality. The single extracts arrive in all the European charts, the album sees important remixes (see Digital Underground, Kevin Saunderson, Chicken Lips, King Britt o Rob Mello) and the name of Stefano approaches the guru’s of dance, so much to be re-named the " Italian Fatboy Slim " for the same versatility and same kaleidoscope of sounds. Then, between remixes for Planet Funk, Dino Lenny and Boogie Drama, Stefano dips into the production of the album for Lorenzo aka Jovanotti: needless to say that “Buon Sangue” becomes a whirlpool of groove with a stylophonic touch, like proved with the crushing single “Tanto3”. Stefano Fontana becomes on of the most demanded names in the international clubbing circuit: besides the Italian major clubs, Stefano does and undoes the suitcases for sets all round Europe, from England to Ibiza, from Mykonos to France, without forgetting the new residence Magazzini Generali of Milano, the base in which experimenting new colours to dancefloor. At the same time, Nostro reinforces also his activity of music designer for various brands such us Adidas, MTV, Coca Cola, Dolce&Gabbana, Diesel creating soundtracks for fashion shows and taking part to various Italian tours. In such an intensive period, Stefano Fontanta is able to set the basis for the new album Stylophonic: Beatbox Show, of the previous year , is launched by the single Baby Beatbox – chosen for the European D&G campaign, as well as included in various compilations – and is a further step forward in shakedelia of electro, dance and funk. Produced from sound engineer by Leftfield, Beatbox Show is the growth to the stylophonic sound: a futuristic soundtrack for dancing as much us for listening, variegated like the next singles extracted, that Pure Imagination that is a thud on radio and charts, or Dancefloor, once more connected to an advert for D&G. After a such intense 2006, 2007 seems even more challenging : Stefano in fact is responsible for Meg’s new album (ex 99 Posse), and for Bugo, but at the meantime he was very satisfied when remixing the French ace Martin Solveig, also for Franco Battiato, he discovered the talented Crookers (for which he is responsible of the production and the discographic moves) and he has been chosen by Nike – with people like LCD Soundsytem, Alex Neri and Tomboy – for the new project Nike Plus. If you find time to sleep, we do not know…
